Sierra Gorda is a protected region located in central Mexico and covers one third of the state Querétaro. There are two protected areas in the region, Queretaro and Guanajuato. Jalpan de Serra is a city located in northern Querétar. The city is often called the heart of Sierra Gorda because it is the only city in the biosphere.

Sierra Gorda is a protected area that has the most diversity of plant and animal life in the UNESCO Man and Biosphere program (MAB). The program promotes sustainable development based on local community efforts and science. The destination includes natural, scenic and cultural richness with vast landscapes, waterfalls, rivers, wildlife and archaeological sites.
