Services

If you love to travel but also care about the environment, then you have come to the right place. By using glooby you can search among millions of cheap flights and hotels and find the most sustainable options. We are proud to be the first travel site showing low carbon flights and eco-labeled hotels. We search the other travel sites, from travel agencies, airlines to booking sites and show you all the information you need to make the best travel decisions.

We live in a time where the growing awareness of the sustainability challenges facing our planet is increasing the supply of green goods and services, making it easier for consumers to find more eco-friendly products. But what does it all mean, and why should we consider sustainability when making our travel bookings?

We believe sustainable travel lead to better experiences, not only for us, but also the next generations of travelers. Sustainability lead to preservation of destinations’ socio-cultural and environmental heritage and to locals who appreciate your visits.

When choosing the most environmentally friendly flights and hotels, you are supporting companies that are actively working to reduce their environmental impact on our environment. Companies who cares about their social and environmental responsibility for a better planet, without compromising your travel experience. We are confident that you will have an inspiring experience when choosing your next journey with glooby.

Flights

We search flights from a variety of travel agencies, airlines and booking sites to guarantee the cheapest and most competitive flights. We show the greenest, cheapest and quickest flights directly in the search results. To make it easier to find the most sustainable flights, glooby calculates flight carbon footprint and show low carbon flights first in the search results.

We show the symbol (SITE.SERVICES.CERTIFIED.ALT) and a scale for every flight offer, where you can see the score between (1-10). Flights with 10 points are the most sustainable and 1 point the least sustainable. With just one click on the scale you see how much carbon emissions the flight emits and how much carbon emissions you save in comparison to the least environmentally friendly alternative.

Air travel and sustainability

There is no doubt that air travel emits a lot of carbon dioxide emissions from planes that affect our environment. Given the fact that air travel seems to be here to stay, it is at least encouraging to note that more and more airlines are trying to reduce their carbon footprints. Airlines are beginning to realize that their sustainability policies are being closely monitored by consumers, which is good news for responsible travelers. The greener the airlines get, the more likely we are to fly with them. Although we have a long way to go before traveling sustainable, technological advances have been made and more effort is being put into making air travel more sustainable. Here are some steps airlines are taking to make air travel more sustainable:

  • Modernizing their fleets with more fuel-efficient aircraft.
  • Employing new technologies and fuel efficiency standards to reduce emissions.
  • Installing so called winglets, upward-facing wing extensions, to reduce drag and fuel use.
  • Introducing sorting of cabin waste, where the combustible waste is sent to power plants and converted into heat and electricity.
  • Reducing the weight of aircrafts to reduce fuel consumption.
  • Serving of locally produced food in cabin.
  • Offering carbon offset programs.
  • Researching and development of alternative aviation fuels.

Flight carbon footprint calculator

We help travelers to choose the most sustainable flight by calculating carbon emissions from every flight. When calculating the flight carbon footprint we use an advanced formula that calculates the aircraft fuel consumption per passenger and route. The greenhouse gas emissions are then established and is described in carbon dioxide equivalents.

A general review of the calculation is described below:

  • The flight distance between two airports is calculated, in case of non-direct flights with stopovers, each flight is treated as individual flights.
  • The fuel consumption per aircraft kilometre is calculated and based on fuel burn rates from aircraft types. Aircrafts used most frequently on short-haul flights is, for example Airbus A320 and Boeing 737. Aircrafts used most frequently on long-haul flights is, for example Airbus 340 and Boeing 787.
  • The carbon emissions per passenger is calculated based on the number of seats per aircraft type and the number of passengers. The emissions are allocated to the different cabin classes: economy, business and first class. The passenger capacity of aircrafts is often reduced because seats in first and business class take up more space and therefore more carbon emissions in comparison to economy seats.
  • The fuel consumption per passenger and seat is converted to carbon emissions. Aircrafts do not only emit CO2, which is why we also take into account non CO2 effects of aviation. Glooby sorts flights with the least amount of such emissions first in the flight search results.

We are constantly working to ensure the quality of our calculations and features. If you want to know more about our calculation, please contact us. If you are looking for the cheapest and most sustainable flights, search flights.

Hotels

We search among over 500,000 hotels worldwide from a variety of hotel chains and booking sites to guarantee the cheapest and most competitive hotels. We show you which hotels are eco-labeled, cheapest and reputable directly in the search results. In order to make it easier for you to find the most sustainable hotel, we show the symbol (SITE.SERVICES.CERTIFIED.ALT)for every eco-labeled hotel.

Glooby will automatically show the most sustainable and affordable hotels first in the search results. The sorting of eco-labeled hotels are based on the developmental structure of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) where we take into account if the eco-label is GSTC approved or GSTC recognized.

The sorting of eco-labels also take into account if the organizations has an internal ranking like gold, silver or bronze. If you are looking for the cheapest and most sustainable hotels, search hotels, If you want to know how glooby guarantees quality and reliability, please read our sorting of eco-labels.

green hotel

Green hotels

Green hotels are building that follows strict guidelines in order to reduce their environmental impact, such as guidelines to save water, energy and waste. We show which hotels are considered green by showing eco-labeled hotels from the most reliable organizations in sustainable tourism. By using this information you can clearly see which hotels are eco-labeled and are working to reduce their waste, water and energy use, protect the local environment, cultural heritage and to protect human rights and children from exploitation.

Eco-labels

An eco-label is a label that is put on goods and services to provide a sustainability assessment. The purpose of an eco-label is to offer guidance to consumers how to make eco-friendly purchasing decisions. There are eco-labels that calculate emissions and consumption, and others that are following sets of guidelines or requirements to reduce environmental impact. Many eco-labels focus on reducing the environmental impact of a particular sector by having the best practices in a sustainability standard.

Through a verification process, often called the certification, a company or organization demonstrate that they meet the requirements of a sustainability standard and earn the right to sell their products as certified, which often results in an environmental label on the goods or services.

In order to determine which eco-labels are the most reliable, we consider if the eco-label is recognized or approved by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). GSTC is is an organization dedicated to promoting the widespread adoption of global sustainable tourism standard to ensure the tourism industry continues to drive conservation and poverty alleviation.

You can read more about the GSTC and our different eco-labels under sorting of eco-labels.
