Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean and is located 250 km west of the Italian mainland and 200 kilometres north of Tunisia. Sardinia belongs to Italy and the island is not very big, it takes only 4 hours to drive from the north to the south of the island. It is said that you can find the best Mediterranean crystal clear water, white beaches and caves in Sardinia. The largest city is Alghero, which is located on the west coast

South Sardinia was the first Mediterranean destination to implement the GSTC Early Adopters Program to test their new criteria and indications for destinations. It was one of Visit South Sardinia's first initiatives, a new organization created by five forward-thinking municipalities: Cagliari, Chia, Muravera, Pula and Villasimius.

Food and drinks

The Italian cuisine is characterized by simplicity and the dishes vary from region to region, but characterized as Mediterranean cuisine. With Mediterranean cuisine is the food of the Mediterranean countries and characterized by fresh ingredients such as fish, fruits, vegetables and potatoes. They use more butter and dairy products in the north of Italy, while in the south of Italy, they use olive oil. Italy has many dishes and products that has become internationally known, such as the Italian olive oil and various types of cheese like mozzarella and gorgonzola. But also dishes and products such as salami, pasta and pizza.

Weather and climate

Sardinia has a typical Mediterranean climate with mitigating winters and hot, dry summers. The warmest month of the year is usually July with temperatures between 27-30 degrees and the coldest month of January with 14 degrees.
